TIME CHANGED: NOW 6:00 PM: Join LGBTIQ+ Ukrainian activists Bogdan Globa and Dr. Maryna Shevtsova to discuss the state of the LGBTIQ+ Ukrainian community. This touring exhibition will also highlight portraits of LGBTIQ+ Ukrainian military service-members and humanitarian workers
At the 6:00 PM panel, Bogdan Globa and Dr. Maryna Shevtsova will discuss the state of LGBTIQ+ communities in Ukraine and the diaspora. Mr. Globa is the founder of QUA, the only organization devoted to serving the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States. He was the first openly queer person to address the Ukrainian Parliament, and sought asylum in the United States after numerous threats to his life. Dr. Shevtsova is currently a EUTOPIA fellow at The University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her research interests and expertise include human rights, particularly the rights of LGBTQ+ people, gender equality, queer migration, urban studies, space and sexuality, anti-gender movements in Europe, heteroactivism, and political homophobia.
The photo exhibition portion of this event is the third leg of a touring show organized by QUA - LGBTQ Ukrainians in America, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Union of the LGBT Military, and KyivPride. Portraits were taken by Crimean Tatar artist Alim Yakubov, and narratives were translated by Ukrainian scholar Dafna Rachok. Prior to William & Mary, this exhibition was hosted by the Taras Schevchenko National Museum in Kyiv, and by the Ukraine House and Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, DC. Photos will be on display from 12-8 the day of the exhibition in the Sadler Atrium.
