Mga Dating Gawi

The Asian American Student Initiative is inviting Jacob Walse-Dominguez, Kimberly Requesto, Jonathan Mercado, and Jai Severson to host five dance workshops on traditional Filipino dances.

These workshops offer the opportunity to have multiple musicians and dancers immersed in different ethnic groups and tribes of the Philippines, who have learned directly from culture bearers throughout the archipelago to transmit learning for cultural preservation.

The workshops will offer the following: a community and ritual dance from the Kalinga of Mountain Province; a ritual and community fingernail dance called Pangalay from the Sama-Tausug of the Sulu Archipelago; a shamanic ritual dance from the Tagalog of Batangas called Subli; a shamanic ritual dance from the Maguindanao called Sagayan; and Gong-chime music, known as Kulintang or Philippine Gamelan, from the Maguindanao, Maranao, and Tausug people of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.

No dance experience is necessary, and all are welcome to join!

Workshops run from Saturday, March 4th to Sunday, March 5th. There is a performance open to all, regardless of dance workshop attendance, on Saturday, March 4th at 6 PM. The schedule is as follows:
