In this talk I'll first recall some history on the modeling of spreading species, and then discuss a free boundary model where the spreading front is represented by the free boundary of nonlinear parabolic equations. I'll report some very recent advances on this rather new topic, and explain their relationship with research on traveling wave solutions.
