"We Have Done Our Part": how traversing sacred and profane contexts imparts both meaning and limit to state violence
Phillip Fucella is a sociologist whose research compares experiences of sacrifice among the spouses of active duty and National Guard soldiers. In this talk he will discuss how military and civilian communities influence the justifications that wives of regular and reservist soldiers ascribe to the hardships of war. While National Guard wives tend to speak more in terms of sacrifice, they also are more likely to recognize a limit to what they and their families owe the nation. He draws on sociological theories of sacrifice (Hubert & Mauss; Bataille) to explain this puzzling result.
Fucella received his Ph.D. at the University of California-Berkeley, where he is a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues, and a Research Associate at the Center for Ethnographic Research. Fucella is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Oberlin College.
