A brief introduction to inverse problems for partial differential equations will be given. A method for recovering the generalized Fourier coefficients of the initial condition for a PDE will be discussed. The method exploits the adjoint equation for the PDE for which we derive a control to achieve the desired result. Examples for "classical" problems, such as inverse heat propagation, will be considered as well.

The talk should be accessible for undergraduates.
