Margaret A. (Peggy) Focarino is Commissioner for Patents for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), she was appointed to this position in January 2012. She is the first female to serve as Patent Commissioner in the agency's 222-year history, when Thomas Jefferson served as the nation's first Patent Commissioner. In 2012, Managing IP named Focarino one of the Top 50 Most Influential People in Intellectual Property in the World, and the most influential woman in intellectual property in the Americas.

In her role as Commissioner, Focarino manages and leads a massive federal agency, with an annual budget of $2.17 billion dollars and a well-educated, diverse workforce of more than 10,000 highly skilled engineers, scientists and public servants.

She is the recipient of numerous awards and a frequent lecturer on innovation, management and intellectual property across the nation and around the world.
