In 1986, Leslie Cheek created an endowment at William & Mary to fund the Cheek Medal to recognize outstanding contributions in the "Presentation of the Arts." The Muscarelle Museum of Art administers this award every other year. This year, President Reveley will award the 2011 Cheek Medal to David Crank and Everett Fahy for their outstanding contributions to the theatrical and museum arts, respectively. The gala evening honoring these two recipients will be September 23, 2011, at the Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre. The recipients will be arriving prior to the ceremony to meet with students and faculty to discuss their work and share their knowledge of their respective fields.
David Crank '82 is an Emmy winning art director and production designer for almost 30 major projects, including the HBO miniseries John Adams (2009 Art Directors Guild Award and 2008 Emmy Award); There Will Be Blood (2008 Art Directors Guild Award); The Tree of Life; The New World; Hannibal; Lassie; and Water for Elephants.
Everett Fahy has worked as a senior professional staff member at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, and Christie's. His keen curatorial sense and scholarship has easily established him as one of the most distinguished scholars of Italian Renaissance art. Among his contributions to the museum field are publications of The Wrightsman Pictures, Metropolitan Flowers, John Pope-Hennessy: A Bibliography, and The Legacy of Leonardo: Italian Renaissance Paintings from Leningrad.
