Maya Indigenous Painting and Weaving: A Conversation with Kaqchikel Artist María Elena Curruchiche
María Elena Curruchiche is a Kaqchikel Maya painter, weaver, and artist from Guatemala.
Inspired by her own experiences and the famous pictorial and artistic traditions in the town of San Juan Comalapa (Chixot), Curruchiche’s work reflects the experience, music, spirituality, and history of Maya Indigenous women. Curruchiche has participated in murals that tell the history of the Kaqchikel people during the Guatemalan Civil War. Through painting, weaving, and participation in documentaries (Saq Nikté, 2013; Loqoläj Ixïm, 2017), María Elena Curruchiche is an artist that weaves together Indigenous Women’s past and present into her artworks. María Elena Curruchiche’s work is part of private and public exhibitions and collections in Germany, Canada, United States, Italy, China, Spain, Mexico, and Guatemala.
