Join Literacy for Life on November 6, from 6:00 - 9:00pm at the School of Education for our annual Reading Between the Wines. The event will feature a selection of scrumptious hors d'oeuvres and wines, silent and live auctions, and a presentation by humorous mystery author Brad Parks. The event will also include the presentation of the third annual Community Partner Award to the Williamsburg Health Foundation.
Attendees will hear from Literacy for Life learners about how the program has changed their lives. In addition, Brad Parks will provide an entertaining presentation. Parks is the only author to have won the Shamus, Nero and Lefty Awards. He received the Shamus (for best first private eye novel) and the Nero (for best American mystery) for his debut, Faces of the Gone, the first book in history to take both awards. Faces of the Gone follows the story of investigative reporter Carter Ross as he attempts to piece together the connection between four Newark murders. The Library Journal praises the novel as "the most hilariously funny and deadly serious mystery debut since Janet Evanovich's One for the Money." Parks also has won two Leftys (for best humorous mystery) for his third and fourth books, The Girl Next Door, and The Good Cop. In addition, The Good Cop won the Shamus Award for best hardcover novel.
The fun continues with amazing experiences up for auction--from tickets to see the Metropolitan Opera perform Il Trovatore along with a backstage tour; an escape to Daniel Island, SC, that includes a villa stay, golf, couples massage and dinner; an elegant dinner and beer pairing for 8 at the DOG Street Gastropub; and even the chance to name a character in Parks' next book!
