[PAST EVENT] Three Jolly Coachmen Enliven the Bard's Birthday
April 20, 2012
7:30pm
On Friday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. the highly popular Kingston Trio Tribute band the Three Jolly Coachmen will headline a slightly early birthday party for William Shakespeare in the Andrews Hall Auditorium. The concert is a benefit for the Virginia Shakespeare Festival's upcoming 2012 season and admission is by whatever donation amount you wish to contribute. Festival Artistic Director Christopher Owens will give a short preview of the 2012 season before the Coachmen take the stage and punch and cake will follow the concert to make sure "Will" feels appropriately honored.
If songs like "Greenback Dollar," "MTA" and "Tom Dooley" make the fond college memories of coffee houses and a simpler time come flooding back, you are sure to enjoy this evening with the Three Jolly Coachmen. These three friends from Williamsburg, Va., supported by bassist Pete Vining, have turned their passion for the Kingston Trio's lively, upbeat sound that took the country by storm in the late '50s and early '60s into an evening of entertainment that will make you believe you've gone back in time by 50 years! Gary Allen, Peter Budnikas and Greg Davy pay extraordinary attention to every detail that made Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard (and later, John Stewart) the toast of the popular music scene for seven years. The harmonies, Gary's urbane commentary, all the way to their matching striped shirts -- they are all part of a memorable evening of music, singing and nostalgia that you may never get to experience again.
This benefit concert takes the place of the Shakespeare Festival's usual Musical Benefit Night in the middle of their season, since the main hall of PBK is undergoing repair this summer. To enter the Andrews Hall Auditorium, you may park in the regular lots of Phi Beta Kappa Hall at 601 Jamestown Road in Williamsburg, then walk all the way around to the back of PBK where you will see a two-story glass-fronted lobby that is the entrance to Andrews Hall. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. on April 20; admission is complimentary with any donation amount, and for more information call the VSF administrative office at 757-221-2683. Donations are tax-deductible and a receipt is available that evening through the Guild of the Virginia Shakespeare Festival.
