Please join the American Indian Student Association and faculty and student allies in solidarity with Standing Rock against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Professors Andrew Fisher and Kara Thompson will provide brief remarks that offer some context for this incredible Indigenous-led movement on unceded Lakota territory in present-day North Dakota. Topics will include: Tribal sovereignty and why this isn?t ?just? an environmental movement; the Army Corp of Engineers and its history of damming the Missouri River; and legal and political strategies employed by the water protectors against the extractivist industry.

This event is sponsored by the Department of English.
