Hundreds of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have been identified in our environment, from plastics additives to pharmaceuticals.
Since the source of many of these contaminants includes consumer goods, they end up in the waste stream and get funneled to wastewater treatment plants. Wild and caged fish in receiving waters of many wastewater treatment plants across the world have been shown to be affected. We have studied the fate of some key CECs within treatment plants, and also have begun to look for other sources of these compounds. This research, and a broader effort to establish a nationally coordinated program on CECs will be presented.
