AidData is offering students the opportunity to participate in Diplomacy Lab during the fall semester. Diplomacy Lab offers students the chance to engage directly with U.S. State Department officials on real world problems. One course credit can be offered for participation.

For this project, students will analyze third party democracy, human rights, corruption, and civil society indicators over the past several years for countries in the East Asia and Pacific region. This analysis will look at key trends over time, compare individual countries to global and regional medians, and examine the relationship between indicator trends and U.S. aid to the region.

During this project, students will produce:

  • A short policy memo bringing together qualitative and quantitative insights on regional democracy trends and U.S. aid;
  • Data visualizations that highlight key trends and relationships;
  • Two case studies focusing on specific countries in the region.

Interested? Please send a cover letter and resume to Jennifer Turner (jturner@aiddata.wm.edu). Applications will be considered on a rolling basis starting August 16. The cover letter (max 500 words) should detail your interest in the project as well as any relevant experience and technical skills. Knowledge of statistical software, regional languages, and data visualization are especially welcome.
