Biography: Janet E. Lord is an international human rights lawyer who serves as senior research fellow at the Harvard Law School Project on Disability and independent human rights advisor for UN agencies, non-governmental organizations and governments. She holds part-time teaching appointments at the University of Maryland, Carey School of Law; American University, Washington College of Law; and the National University of Ireland (Galway). Earlier in her career, she worked on monitoring the implementation of the Mine Ban Treaty as part of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, focusing on landmine survivor rights in mine-affected countries. She served as legal counsel to NGOs and lead governments in the negotiation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. As part of her human rights law practice, she has worked on human rights and humanitarian law in more than 30 countries. Current work includes advising the Inter-Agency Standing Committee on Humanitarian Action, working with North Korean refugee organizations to report on country conditions in North Korea, and on approaches to addressing disability-based persecution in international criminal law. She serves on the Board of Amnesty International USA. She holds degrees from Kenyon College (BA), the University of Edinburgh in Scotland (LLB & LLM) and the George Washington University Law School (LLM in International and Comparative Law).
