IIC Student Brownbag Discussion:

The Sustainability Myth: Environmental Gentrification and the Politics of Justice

Dr. Melissa Checker, Hagedorn Professor of Urban Studies at Queens College and Associate Professor of Anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center, will participate in a student brownbag discussion via Zoom focused on environmental gentrification and the hidden socioeconomic consequences of sustainable policies. Highlighting her research in New York documented in her new book The Sustainability Myth: Environmental Gentrification and the Politics of Justice, Dr. Checker will discuss how advocates are bridging political, racial, and economic fields to shed light on the injustice of sustainable policies and will give advice to students on how to become environmental justice advocates.
