[PAST EVENT] The impact of informal road building on Indigenous communities and forest in Honduras
Location
Zoom webinarPanel Discussion with Erik Nielsen, Edgardo Benitez, and Jeremy Radachowsky: The impact of informal road building on Indigenous communities and forest in Honduras
Join us for a conversation on the impact of informal infrastructural development on deforestation and the land rights of Indigenous peoples in Honduras. Infrastructural projects in areas of rich biodiversity and Indigenous lands pose multiple challenges for conservation and the protection of land rights. This panel will discuss the case of informal road construction in Mosquitia, a region where cocaine drug trafficking has accelerated rural transformations. Dr. Erik Nielsen (Northern Arizona University), Edgardo Benitez Maclin (Institute for the Common Amerindian Future), and Dr. Jeremy Radachowsky (Wildlife Conservation Society) will discuss the different interests involved in the road project, the pressures created on local groups and the environment, and the actions taken by communities and their partners to fight back. Moderated by Assistant Professor Dr. Fernando Galeana-Rodriguez, this event will explore how infrastructural projects reflect the combined effects of agrarian change and drug trafficking and what can be done to support the environmental defenders in the frontlines.
