[PAST EVENT] Youth Justice Awareness Month Film Screening
October 21, 2014
8pm
Every year, it is estimated that over 200,000 youth are placed in the adult criminal justice system - the vast majority for non-violent offenses. This placement is developmentally inappropriate in almost every sense - these youth are denied access to the educational and rehabilitative services available in juvenile facilities and are placed at increased risk for rape and suicide. Federal laws mandate that youth be kept separate from adults in correctional facilities, but facilities frequently do not have the capacity to adhere to these standards, and youth are either placed in solitary confinement, or are forced to intermingle with the more hardened adult inmates. Research shows that youth placed in the adult system are more likely to recidivate, placing the public at risk. Join us for a Youth Justice Awareness Month film screening on October 21st to raise awareness for enacting sensible, research-driven policies that treat youth as youth.
