[PAST EVENT] Evening Discussion with Dina Gilio-Whitaker: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice
Location
Zoom eventJoin us for a conversation with renowned Indigenous author, scholar, journalist, surfer, and California State University San Marcos Professor Dina Gilio-Whitaker (Colville Confederated Tribes descendant) about Indigenous self-determination, nationalism, and Indigenized environmental justice. Gilio-Whitaker serves as the Policy Director and Senior Research Associate at the Center for World Indigenous Studies, where she works with Indigenous governments to formulate environmental policy strategies in cooperation with federal and state governments and organizations. She co-authored the popular book “All the Real Indians Died Off” and 20 Other Myths About Native Americans (Beacon Press, 2016) and just released her latest book, As Long As Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice from Colonization to Standing Rock. Moderated by Assistant Professor Dr. Fernando Galeana-Rodriguez, this evening’s conversation will explore the centuries-long struggle Indigenous communities have faced regarding land rights, treaty violations, and food and water security, and their fight against the government and corporate interest and incursions on their lands. Through the lens of Indigenized environmental justice, Gilio-Whitaker will engage us in a discussion about an Indigenized approach to environmental justice policy and activism.
