Location
Copper Fox Distillery, 901 Capitol Landing Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185Access & Features
- Open to the public
Join us at the Copper Fox Distillery in Williamsburg as VIMS Associate Research Scientist, Jim Gartland, provides an overview of the VIMS Shark Survey: the longest-running fishery-independent survey of shark populations in the world! This survey, founded in 1973 (two years before the movie Jaws hit theaters), brought global attention to significant declines in shark populations due to overfishing and other stressors, and was instrumental in providing the data upon which the first U.S. management plan for sharks was established in 1993.
Following the presentation, VIMS outreach staff will have an exhibit for you to interact with preserved shark specimens, jaws, shark longline gear and more!
