We are living in an era of resurgent nationalism that many fear will undermine democracy. Yet during the twentieth century, the rise of nationalism both destroyed democracies across Europe and created democracies across Asia. So under what conditions is nationalism a resource that helps to build a democracy, and under what conditions does it undermine democracy? This talk explores the different ways in which nationalism has mapped onto democracy across a range of Asian countries and argues that narratives of nation have and continue to be a key democratic resource.
