Title: PRODUCT LIFE DATA ANALYSIS ~or~
HOW LONG WILL MY TOASTER AND HEART PACEMAKER LAST?
Abstract. This talk is an introduction to product life data analysis in industry.
It presents basic concepts such as the Weibull distribution, hazard function, and
probability plots for getting information from life data. Such analyses yield
information on
* The percentage of the population that will fail on warranty, during design
life, or before the next overhaul or inspection.
* Whether the failure rate increases or decreases as the population ages. This
information is used to determine whether factory burn-in of units or preventive
replacement of old units in service is useful.
* A prediction of the number of population failures in a coming month, quarter,
or year.
* During product development, a prediction of the improved product life that
would result from eliminating one or more failure modes.
These analyses are illustrated with life data from a variety of electrical,
mechanical, and electronic products and from maintenance of production equipment.
