Mire Koikari is a professor in the Department of Women's Studies at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Born and raised in Tokyo, she earned her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is the author of Pedagogy of Democracy (Temple 2008) and Cold War Encounters in US-Occupied Okinawa (Cambridge 2015), as well as many articles in English and Japanese. Dr. Koikari's research "explores the meanings and consequences of feminism, racism, nationalism, militarism, and imperialism in Asia and the Pacific" At this public talk, she will discuss gender issues in culture and politics in Japan since the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown in Fukushima in March 2011.
