Art After Hours: Splinters of Wood: Woodblock Carving

*FOR WILLIAM & MARY STUDENTS ONLY*

Students will learn the ancient process of woodblock carving by creating symbolic portraits of figures from William & Mary’s extensive and complicated history. Students will learn how to prepare the block and render the image, along with carving techniques, the printing process and how to create an edition. We will use both traditional and nontraditional carving tools to carve the blocks.

Art After Hours workshops at the Muscarelle Museum of Art are designed for current William & Mary students with majors outside of Studio Art to learn more about disciplines such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and more. Priority registration will be limited to non-Studio Art majors and students who have not yet declared a major. Studio Art majors may register in the week preceding the workshop if spaces are available.

Art After Hours seeks to expand the reach of W&M arts programs and provide more students with opportunities to explore creativity and discover self-understanding through artistic expression. The program is made possible through a generous gift from Jean B. Estes ’75, P ’06 and Rob W. Estes ’74, P ’06.
