A School Like no Other: The Cernauti Institute for the Blind and Deaf in Interwar Romania
Access & Features
- Open to the public

As part of the Annual European Studies/ Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies Student Faculty Conference
Maria Bucur's (Indiana University) presentation examines the activities and results of the Cernauti Institute for the Blind and Deaf as a window into the development of special education in Romania during the interwar period. The ability of this school to serve a diverse population with great success, even in the face of government indifference for special education, provides an excellent case study for understanding the potential to empower disabled persons to live full lives. What made the Cernauti school unique was its marginality, the strong local commitment of all ethnic and religious communities to supporting it, and an administrative leadership that stood up to the Bucharest authorities with success.
