[PAST EVENT] Baxter-Ward Talk: Allison P. Anoll '09, Shaping Citizens: A Research Agenda Starting in Tucker Hall

Each year the Government Dept. invites a distinguished alum to speak as part of the Baxter-Ward Fellowship. This year's recipient is Dr. Allison P. Anoll '09, an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Vanderbilt University. Professor Anoll studies U.S. political participation, racial politics, and the criminal justice system, including how social context and networks shape each. In her book, The Obligation Mosaic: Race and Social Norms in US Political Participation, Dr. Anoll shows that the obligations that bring people into the political world—or encourage them to stay away—vary systematically by race in the United States, with broad consequences for representation. In other work, she shows how inequalities in the criminal justice system produce variation in political activity and public opinion. Her current projects focus on social movements and the race socialization of children. Dr. Anoll’s work is published in the American Political Science Review, the Journal of Politics, and with University of Chicago Press. She teaches courses on political participation, representation, race, research design, and the carceral state to both undergraduates and graduate students at Vanderbilt. She is the recipient of multiple teaching awards.
