Fueling Pre-service Science Teachers? Interest to Teach in High-Needs Schools
Join Meredith Kier, assistant professor, in a discussion about how the pre-existing interests in pre-service science teachers may support their developing commitments to teach in high-needs schools (HNSs). Kier recently conducted a study with Dr. Jason Chen investigating the development of preservice science teachers? interest in teaching science in HNSs over one academic year. The study explored which programmatic features of the School of Education?s Noyce program may have maintained scholars? initial interest to teach in a HNS, and which programmatic features may have helped foster a firmer commitment to teach in a HNS. The study?s findings provide implications to teacher educators and teacher preparation programs for preparing competent teachers to teach in diverse settings.
