Dr. Felecia Commodore will present the Spring 2022 Higher Ed Salon, "Gladiators or Gatekeepers? Social Contracts and the Role of Higher Education Governing Boards in Advancing Equity and Institutional Excellence."
In most discussions of higher education leadership, decision-making, DEI efforts, and institutional effectiveness there is one group missing: Boards of Trustees. Though this group sits at one of the highest levels of power in the higher education ecosystem their role and approach in decisions made and institutional policies crafted is often ignored. The question is posed, though boards hold much power, what do they do with it? In a higher education marketplace with competing demands of accountability, providing a public good, establishing a private benefit, and increasing social mobility, boards of trustees must take seriously the opportunities they have to either establish more equitable higher education institutions or to solidify structures of systemic exclusion. The course that trustees choose can and will ultimately impact institutional effectiveness. A discussion of strategies and approaches to achieve success, including engaging in Culturally Sustaining Governance, will be highlighted.
Dr. Felecia Commodore is Assistant Professor of Educational Foundations & Leadership at Old Dominion University.
This talk will be presented in-person at the School of Education and simultaneously livestreamed via Zoom.
