POSTPONED:
Join us for the first Teaching & Learning Talk (TLT) of the Fall 2023 Semester. STLI is proud to host this session, led by Dr. Chris Gareis (School of Education), that will explore performance-based approaches to learning and assessment.
Assessing our students’ learning isn’t typically the thing that we tend to love about university-level teaching. But would we feel differently about that if we were more confident that our assessments were credible, meaningful, and even “authentic” (note the air quotes) representations of our students’ learning? In this session, we’ll look at the myriad, creative, engaging ways that you already do (or would like to) assess your students’ complex learning—assessments that can probably be characterized as being performance-based assessments. Then we’ll take a closer look at several principles for designing performance-based assessments (and some pitfalls to avoid!) when creating them (or even when hunting and gathering them from other sources!). We aim to strengthen the validity and reliability of such assessments while keeping the authenticity, engagement, and even the fun that you’ve likely already baked into them! Join us as we take a step or two toward building better assessments of and for learning!
Lunch provided with RSVP by September 29th.
