"Sankofa" is a legendary 1993 independent film by Ethiopian American director, Haile Gerima, who describes his work as "a resistance film" amplifying Black resistance to enslavement as a resource for resistance to continuing oppression.
To celebrate Sankofa's approaching 30th anniversary, Ava DuVernay's Array Releasing has restored the film and created an accompanying learning resource: https://www.sankofa101.org/
Brief introduction and post-film discussion with Muscarelle Artist in Residence, Steve Prince, Swem Oral Historian, Andre Taylor, and W&M History PhD, Mark Guerci. Steve hosted a screening of "Sankofa" when it was first released and was inspired and influenced by it. Andre and Mark are contributors to the learning resource.
