Chinese paper cutting is a traditional folk art that can be dated back to the Eastern Han Dynasty around 100. A.D. Paper-cut artworks are exquisite creations made using paper and scissors, with an abundant number of patterns. At traditional Chinese festivals, people place paper-cut artworks on their windows and doors to increase the festival atmosphere and to express good wishes. In 2006, Chinese paper cutting was officially recognized as National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The Chinese Paper-Cut Art Exhibition at the Sadler Center showcases New-Realism style paper-cut artworks that integrate traditional Chinese techniques with Western painting. These large-scale paper cuts are each uniquely designed and cut by hand. It has more process of cutting and layering, and initiates a new field that combines clear concave-convex, bright color, and 3-dimension perspective. The exhibition will run from Friday, Nov. 8 to Monday, Nov.18.
