Shenaz Patel--one of the leading literary voices of the francophone world--will make a presentation (in English) on her life and work as a writer from the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Patel has published four novels and numerous short stories and has received multiple international literary awards. She will discuss one of her primary commitments as a contemporary writer: bringing light to the underrepresented spaces and people of the world.

Patel's locally grounded fiction--which she always sets on the island of Mauritius where she lives--has been celebrated for the powerful ways it links to global issues, in particular the social problems women and minorities face daily. Patel's visit and presentation, sponsored by Reves, MLL, Africana Studies, AMES and Arts and Sciences, provides an excellent opportunity to "stimulate a fruitful experience of disorientation that allows students to see their own lives in broader perspective."
