[PAST EVENT] Christine Marran Lecture, "Biotropes: Interpreting the Nonhuman World in Japanese Literature"
Access & Features
- Open to the public
In this talk and discussion, Christine Marran introduces the concept of “biotropes” and discusses how reading for biotropes allows us to better highlight the role of nonhuman entities in literary texts. She will discuss the ways in which particular approaches to storytelling highlight the material world in such a way as to perform a critique of culture.
Open to the public. Made possible through the generous support of the Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) Program, the Reves Center, and the Environmental Science and Policy (ENSP) Department.
Christine Marran is Professor in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at University of Minnesota and co-convener of UMN's Environmental Humanities Initiative. Her recent work in ecocriticism includes Ecology Without Culture: Aesthetics for a Toxic World (University of Minnesota Press, 2017), and essays in Ecocriticism in Japan, ed. by Wake, Suga, and Yuki (Lexington Books, 2017), boundary 2 (46:3, 2019), Ishimure Michiko's Writing in Ecocritical Perspective, ed. my Allen and Yuki (Lexington Books, 2015), among others.
