The Italian Studies program is thrilled to welcome back filmmaker and activist Fred Kuwornu for a conversation about his latest work. Please join us on Zoom next Thursday, October 8, from 4:00-5:30pm as he discusses the impact of Black Lives Matter in Italy, the country's colonial legacy, and his latest web doc series about Black Italian identity. This is sure to be a great event - we hope you can make it!
“2020 is a pivotal year providing an opportunity for the Western world to question itself genuinely as to whether enough has been done to portray and include the histories of people of African descent in western society. Recent events in the United States of America are also having an effect in Italy. Now is the perfect moment for people to ask themselves whether Black lives matter in Italy and if the country is ready to reappraise the way in which it talks about itself.” - F.K.
Fred Kudjo Kuwornu is a filmmaker-activist-producer-educator born and raised in Italy and based in Brooklyn. His mother is an Italian Jew, and his father is a Ghanaian surgeon who has lived in Italy since the early 1960s. Fred holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Mass Media from the University of Bologna. He began his career as a DJ and producer before working as a show writer for RAI public television in Rome. In more recent years, he has produced and directed the award-winning documentaries Inside Buffalo, 18 IUS SOLI, Blaxpoitalian: 100 Years of Blackness in Italian Cinema, and the web doc series BlaqItaliano.
