[PAST EVENT] Re-Situating "Billboard" Jackson: The Untold Story of African-American Music, Mobility and Freedom

James Albert "Billboard" Jackson was an early twentieth century integrationist and race pioneer in the fields of entertainment, government and industry. An elaboration on the life, movements and elusive place of Billboard Jackson will serve as an entry-point into discussions of the relationship between music, automobiles, consumerism and freedom in pre-Civil Rights Black America.
Anthony Kwame Harrison is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at Virginia Tech, where he teaches classes on popular music, black aesthetics and cultural anthropology. He is author of Hip Hop Underground: The Integrity and Ethics of Racial Identification (Temple
University Press, 2009) and Associate Editor for the Journal of Popular Music Studies.
