[PAST EVENT] Music in American Culture Series presents Bethany S. Goldberg
March 30, 2011
5pm - 6pm
The New York Academy of Music (capacity 4,600) was one of the world's largest performing venues when it opened in 1854. Designed as a place to be seen as well as to witness artistic performances by some of the best singers and musicians of Europe, it symbolized the rapid growth of New York City and boosted the position of the United States in the transatlantic cultural exchange. The Academy's conflicting musical, civic, international, social, and economic identities, however, led to significant challenges, which had to be overcome to ensure the Academy's lasting place in nineteenth-century American musical life.
