The New Orleans-born virtuoso pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk made his New York debut in 1853, after studying in Paris and touring Europe to wild acclaim. Europeans loved the exotic "American" sound of his compositions. Americans, in contrast, responded to the nationalism of a newly emerging musical identity that they heard in such works as The Banjo.
