[PAST EVENT] 19th Annual Minnie G. Braithwaite Lecture

Inaugurated in the 1996-97 academic year, the Minnie Braithwaite Lecture is one of the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies most notable and distinguished events. Every year, the series, named in honor of Minnie Braithwaite, the first women to attempt to attend classes at the College of William & Mary in 1896, features a speaker whose work in the fields of gender, sexuality, or women's issues is particularly engaging and insightful.
This year, the Gender, Sexuality, and Women Studies Department is pleased to welcome two graphic novelists, Nicole J. Georges and A.K. Summers for a talk titled "Queer Comix"
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Georges is a prolific writer and illustrator whose vast oeuvre includes her diary comic, Invincible Summer, the zine Tell It Like It Tiz, and, most recently, a graphic memoir, Calling Dr. Laura, which won the accolades of renowned individuals like Rachel Maddow and Alison Bechdel. In addition to writing, Georges currently teaches at California College for the Art's MFA in Comics Program and has been the recipient of numerous awards, such as the Sunburst Award for Excellence in Arts Education.
Similarly prolific, the longtime artist and writer A.K. Summers is best known for creating the zine Negativa, the animated shorts Topless Dickless Clueless and World Without Femmes, and for her graphic memoir Pregnant Butch. Based on her own experiences, Pregnant Butch explores the intersection of gender and birth, as well as the underrepresented experience of queer pregnancy.
