Restoring oyster populations remains a high priority in Maryland. The Horn Point Laboratory Oyster Hatchery cultivates juvenile oysters and plants them in rivers and creeks throughout the Chesapeake Bay to increase abundances. However, it is not understood how hatchery-produced oysters affect the genetic diversity of remaining wild oyster populations. Sufficient genetic diversity is important for overall population health and allows for populations to adapt to changing environments and stressors. Ms. Katie Hornick of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science will focus on current efforts and tools used to monitor genetic diversity of oysters produced in the hatchery as well as those at restoration sites to determine whether it changes over time.
