Virginia supports a vibrant offshore fishery for tunas and billfishes. While most tunas are retained, the vast majority of billfishes are released. We have used pop-up satellite archival technology to gain insights into the movements, habitat utilization, and post-release survival of billfishes caught off Virginia and throughout the western North Atlantic. Our results indicate that post-release mortality can be quite high under certain conditions, but it can be greatly reduced with changes in hook types and how fish are treated prior to release.
