Aquaculture is the breeding, rearing, and harvesting of plants and animals in an aquatic system (like farming and ranching at sea). It is becoming a popular alternative to wild harvesting of some species in the Bay, such as oysters, and Dan Sennett will tell us more about how VIMS is using aquaculture to study the Bay. Students from the Williamsburg Montessori Middle School have spent a year studying aquaculture and will lead several activities and present display stations to show what they have learned. Participants will use microscopes and take part in hands-on activities, and each child will receive their own mini-aquaculture kit to use at home!
These family-friendly labs are provided by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve at VIMS. There is no charge; however, registration is required due to limited space. {{http://forms.wm.edu/1728/,Register online}} or call 804-684-7878 for additional information.
