Location

Among Ezekiel’s poetry is a prophecy predicting the fall of the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre. The poem depicts the island city as a prosperous merchant ship, wrecked in a storm. While commentary has often focused on the poem’s maritime imagery, I will argue that the poem is animated by a concept of political communities as bodies and how these bodies succeed or fail.

Jacqueline Vayntrub is Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible at Yale University in the Divinity School with appointments in Religious Studies and Judaic Studies. She has a PhD from the University of Chicago and has held fellowships at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. Her expertise is in biblical poetry and wisdom literature, biblical poetics, and literary theory both ancient and modern.
