Join William & Mary’s Global Research Institute for the launch of Activism in Hard Times in Central and Eastern Europe: People Power (Routledge, 2024), co-written by W&M Professor Paula Pickering. This book elevates the voices of civic activists from Central and Eastern Europe and analyzes a wealth of information to generate new insights into how activism in the region manages to be vibrant, diverse, and consequential.

Because of these countries’ unique historical trajectory, these activists have, in important ways, leap-frogged their counterparts in the West. Giving special attention to activists in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, the book focuses on responses to the recent “hard times” – the shrinking of public space for civil society, democratic backsliding, polarization, and Russia’s war in Ukraine. The contributors contend that these activists provide important lessons for others confronting similar challenges around the world.

A presentation by Dr. Paula Pickering, Dr. Patrice McMahon of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Dr. Dorota Pietrzyk-Reeves of Jagiellonian University and Q&A will take place on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 4:00 pm in The Hive Event Space (ground floor of the Swem Library) and on Zoom. A light reception will follow immediately after the event on the Conservation Patio.
