Title: The Mackey Analogy in Representation Theory and C*-Algebras

Abstract: To a reductive Lie group, we can associate a simpler group, called the Cartan motion group, by analogy with the group of isometries of Euclidean space. Mackey proposed that there should be some sort of correspondence between unitary representations of the Cartan group and those of the original group. In this talk, I will introduce and illustrate this analogy, and I will also introduce my work on this analogy in the language of noncommutative geometry. This talk is intended to be accessible to non-experts.
