Title: Neutrinos: A Data Science Opportunity
Abstract: As Artificial Intelligence is applied more broadly within society it is imperative that research is performed to quantify how bias and uncertainties affect performance. The domain of particle physics research can play an important role in these discussions due to their access to high quality, data driven simulations, where researchers can tune model inputs to study how they affect network performance. This colloquium will explore how these techniques are being implemented in two neutrino physics experiments NOvA and DUNE, and outline how future research will impact the broader data science and physics community.
Bio: Dr. Thomas Karl Warburton received his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of Sheffield, UK, in 2013 and 2017 respectively and now performs research at Iowa State University. His research domain is in high energy physics, specifically neutrino oscillations where he works on the NOvA and DUNE experiments. He led the Deep Learning group on NOvA for 2.5 years where he championed studies into assessing network bias and uncertainty in computer vision and now leads the flagship NOvA analysis when he uses big data methods to extract fundamental properties of the Universe.
