Abstract:
I will present an overview of the phase diagram of hydrogen at high pressure. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and as a consequence, plays a unique role in many areas of physics. Not only is it the principal component of many Jovian planets like Jupiter and Saturn, but it also displays fascinating properties at extreme conditions of fundamental interest. After presenting a brief description of computational physics and its important influence in physics at extreme conditions, I will describe the recent advances in the understanding of the phase diagram of hydrogen which include: the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition during molecular dissociation, the metal-insulator transition in the solid and the possible existence of a zero-temperature quantum liquid.
