University of Adelaide

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and is located on the south-eastern coast of the continent. It is a trendy city full of public arts, free museums, and rich Aboriginal and colonial history. It also has a Mediterranean climate, wonderful beaches, and is a short drive from the Australian outback, making it a popular holiday destination. Adelaide is located on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people, and the Kaurna culture can be seen through a variety of physical features around the area, including art installations and memorials, as well as through community cultural activities and events. In fact, the City of Adelaide was one of the first to sign a Reconciliation Vision Statement in 1997 and its Reconciliation Action Plan reaffirms a long standing commitment to keep peace with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The University of Adelaide is located in the heart of the city and is close to many of Adelaide's attractions, including state museums, the state library, parliament buildings, parklands, the Adelaide Zoo, a concert center, sports stadium, botanical gardens, and Adelaide's shopping district. Established in 1874, the University is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in Australia.

The Adelaide program will include a W&M faculty-taught course. A second course will examine global environmental and sustainability issues with a focus on Australia. This course will be team taught by faculty from Adelaide University’s Geography, Environment, and Population Department. The Adelaide program will include local field trips to locations that relate directly to these fields of study, such as visits to the Living Kaurna Aboriginal Cultural Center. Possible excursions could include the Migration Museum, the Adelaide Central markets, and the Cleland Conservation Park. Overnight excursions may include Kangaroo Island, a large island off the coast of South Australia noted for its native animals and vegetation, and Flinders Chase National Park, a natural amphitheater of mountains that is an important historical location for the indigenous aboriginal people of Australia.
