Join us to learn more about careers and professional skills that can be developed in photography. A panel of professionals with skills, experience, and varying professional roles will join us to talk more about how they have and continue to use photography in their career and life. We will also celebrate the launch of a photobook from one of our alumni and panelists, Lynn Alleva Lilley '87.

Lynn Alleva Lilley '87

Lynn Alleva Lilley is an American photographer born in Washington, DC and currently living in Silver Spring, MD. At the core of her work is connection to nature and place. Her creative process is inspired by poetry, music, painting and science and she has a particular interest in the photobook as a uniquely intimate way of presenting her photographs. Her first photobook, Tender Mint, includes photographs made in Jordan over a three year period which reveal feelings of displacement, loss, adaptation and other-worldly beauty in the context of Jordan. The photographs in her recent photobook, Deep Time, present the mysterious life and world of the ancient Atlantic horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus. Ms. Alleva Lilley lived with her family in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan during 2016-2018 where she continued to photograph. Upon returning home to Silver Spring, Maryland, she completed a body of work in the woods and creek of Sligo Creek park near her home which will be published as a photobook in September 2023. Ms. Alleva Lilley received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from William & Mary and a Master of Arts degree in international studies from the University of South Carolina. She began photographing more than almost 30 years ago and studied with photographer Terri Weifenbach who became an important mentor. Her photographs have been exhibited in the United States and France and her photobooks are included in many public and university libraries in the United States and internationally.

Eliot Dudik

Eliot Dudik is an American photographer and book artist with works in institutional and private collections worldwide.  His long-term projects, books, and collaborations focus on the connections between landscape, culture, memory, history, and often how these combine to create a sense of place.  Increasingly focused on the photobook as a means of expression, Eliot has published, self-published, or hand crafted 11 editions to date.

His works have been acquired by institutions such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Duke University’s Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the MoMA Library, Virginia Commonwealth University's Special Collections and Archives, Chrysler Museum of Art, William & Mary, the Cassilhaus Collection, The Do Good Fund Collection, Southeast Museum of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Phoenix Art Museum, as well as many private collections.  

Eliot is based in Richmond, Virginia where he manages his active photography and book arts studios.  With significant help from his supportive colleagues, Eliot founded the photography program within the Department of Art & Art History at the William & Mary in 2014 where he is currently teaching and learning.  

Michael Bartolotta

Michael Bartolotta is an award-winning creative director and photographer who focuses on thoughtful design and creating unique tintypes & ambrotypes using the wet plate collodion process. It’s one of the earliest forms of photography … and it’s pretty cool. I hold a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.F.A. from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY. Currently, I am working professionally in Williamsburg, VA as a creative director and as a tintype instructor at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond in Richmond, VA.

Moderator: David Brashear

David Brashear has a long history of engagement at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. He joined the Muscarelle’s Board of Trustees in 1999 and served as chair from 2004 to 2008. In 2013, Brashear became chair of the Museum’s capital campaign, and served in that role until his appointment as the Museum’s Interim Director in January 2019. In 2020, he was named Director of the Muscarelle Museum of Art.

In addition to his involvement at William & Mary, Brashear has brought experience in the non-profit and education world. He formerly served as vice chair of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, chair of the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, president of the Bronxville Board of Education, and vice chair of the WHRO-Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association.

Brashear graduated summa cum laude with a degree in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and subsequently received an MBA from Harvard. More recently, he completed extensive work at the graduate level at Columbia University, with a focus on architectural history. He has broad experience with arts and educational institutions. Brashear is an accomplished photographer and his work has been featured in several museum exhibitions.

We will host a panel with Q&A, with an opportunity to learn from our professionals. Then we will host a networking section where students and panelists can mingle and chat. Canon will also be present with photography equipment for guests to touch, try, and learn about in-person.
