Brett Wilson

Prof. Wilson will discuss how Laurence Sterne’s 1759 novel Tristram Shandy reclaims the squiggly, eccentric, erratic, and failed in order to question the imperative for both novels and people to be straight. Brett D. Wilson is associate professor and chair of English at William & Mary. He is author of A Race of Female Patriots: Women and Public Spirit on the British Stage, 1688-1745 (Bucknell University Press, 2012). His articles on British 18th-century drama and poetry have appeared in ELH, Eighteenth-Century Studies, and in the essay collections Invoking Slavery in the Eighteenth-Century British Imagination (Ashgate, 2013) and Patriarchal Moments (Bloomsbury Academic, 2015). He is currently at work on a monograph, The Absent Governor.
