Title: Beyond the Breath: A Statistician's Look at Air Pollution and Health
Abstract: Air pollution poses a continuous and urgent threat to both human health and the global climate. While the link between air pollution and climate change is complex, greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants like particulate matter contribute to rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and deteriorating air quality. These consequences have cascading effects on public health.
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a key focus in air quality research due to its severe health impacts. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has implemented policy changes and stricter National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) to reduce the harmful burden of PM2.5 exposure.
In this talk, I will delve into several case studies showcasing statistical approaches for analyzing the clinical and epidemiological problems linked to air pollution. I'll discuss advanced statistical methods, their implementation challenges, and how they help us better understand the relationship between air pollution and public health.
