Join us for the May After Hours lecture, where Dr. Andrew Scheld will share information on his work on assessing the impacts of offshore wind energy development on commercial shellfish industries and other commercially exploited species in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Large-scale development of offshore wind energy is planned throughout the US Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with construction having begun in several sites. By 2030 it is anticipated that thousands of turbines and millions of feet of cable will be installed in the region. Development is expected to affect commercial and recreational fisheries, displacing effort for certain gear types and target species while potentially creating opportunities for others. This talk will investigate coexistence of offshore wind energy and traditional fisheries from a socioeconomic perspective, highlighting potential impacts to seafood production, fisheries management, and efforts to monitor and mitigate adverse effects. A bioeconomic model used to predict impacts to important Mid-Atlantic shellfish fisheries and their management will be introduced to explore interactions between these sectors. Work being done at VIMS to monitor and assess impacts of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project on commercially exploited species will also be described.
Registration is required.
After Hours lectures are designed for an adult audience.
We are excited to offer this lecture in-person in McHugh Auditorium on VIMS' Gloucester Point Campus! This lecture will also be available as a live-streamed webinar. Registration is required for both in-person and webinar attendees. Webinar links will be sent in all registration confirmation emails. At this time, we are expecting a hybrid event, but registrants will be notified in advance if the event moves to a virtual only format.
This event will be photographed and/or videotaped. By attending this event, each participant consents to being photographed and/or videotaped and authorizes VIMS/William & Mary to use such photographs and videos for VIMS/W&M media purposes.
